Small business payroll files for St. Thomas

Serving St. Thomas, Central Elgin and Southwold

Accountant for St. Thomas and Elgin County

St. Thomas is growing faster than it has since its days as a railway junction. The 2021 census counted 42,918 residents, about 10% more than five years earlier, and the PowerCo battery plant on the city’s eastern edge is pulling in contractors, suppliers and families from the GTA. A&P Accounting & Tax Experts prepares the tax returns, books and payroll that come with that kind of change.

Our St. Thomas clients include tradespeople who incorporated to take on bigger contracts, households filing their first return from a new Elgin County address, and farm families thinking about the next generation. Each situation brings its own forms, from a T2125 for a new sole proprietor to the T2042 farm statement, and we work with all of them.

Most clients here work with us online, and the rest make the 25 to 30 minute drive up Highway 4. Either way, nothing is filed until we have walked you through it.

Tax Questions That Come Up as St. Thomas Grows

Growth brings paperwork. A bigger contract, a house sold in Mississauga or a son taking over the home farm each changes what you file and when, and the cost of a mistake grows with the size of the change.

These are the three situations St. Thomas and Elgin County clients raise with us most often right now.

Construction contractor invoices sorted for HST

Suppliers and Contractors Serving the PowerCo Battery Plant

PowerCo Canada, Volkswagen’s battery company, is building its first North American gigafactory on roughly 600 hectares that St. Thomas annexed from Central Elgin in 2023. In September 2026 the company moved the start of cell production to 2029, but construction of the first phase is continuing, and that work is keeping local trades, fabricators and haulers busy.

Scaling up for a project of this size usually means incorporating, hiring and invoicing larger general contractors all at once. Once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, HST registration is mandatory, and the 13% Ontario rate applies to most construction services.

  • A new corporation with a T2 return built around its first fiscal year
  • A CRA payroll account, source deductions and T4 slips for new hires
  • WSIB coverage, which is mandatory for most Ontario construction businesses
  • T5018 slips if construction is your main line of business
  • Invoices and receipts organized so every input tax credit holds up

Moving to St. Thomas From the GTA

Many new St. Thomas residents sold a house in the Toronto area and bought here for less. If that house was your home for every year you owned it, the principal residence exemption usually shelters the whole gain, but the sale still has to be reported on Schedule 3 with the designation on Form T2091(IND).

If the move brought you at least 40 km closer to a new job, moving costs such as movers, travel and the real estate commission on the old home can be deducted against income earned here. Your first Ontario Trillium Benefit claim from a new address also needs property tax or rent for both homes.

Elgin County Farms and Rural Businesses

Outside the city limits, Elgin is still farm country. Any Ontario farm grossing $7,000 or more a year must renew its Farm Business Registration with Agricorp, which also delivers AgriStability and AgriInvest in this province.

We prepare the T2042 farm statement, keep your tax return and Agricorp figures consistent, and help families plan the handover early. A transfer to the next generation can use the intergenerational rollover and the capital gains exemption for qualified farm property, but only when the paperwork is set up years in advance.

Communities We Serve in Elgin County

St. Thomas is a separated city: it is the seat of Elgin County but runs independently of it, which is why your property tax bill comes from the city while your neighbours in Central Elgin or Southwold pay through their township. We work with clients on both sides of that line.

  • St. Thomas: 25 to 30 minutes up Highway 4 to our Wellington Street office.
  • Talbotville: home to the Amazon fulfillment centre on the old Ford assembly site, and about 20 minutes from downtown London.
  • Port Stanley: the Lake Erie village is about 40 minutes away, so most clients there work with us online.
  • Union and Sparta: roughly 35 minutes, with drop-off and online service equally popular.
  • Belmont: about 25 minutes, often quicker than driving into St. Thomas.
  • Central Elgin and Southwold: rural routes and townships around the city, all within about 40 minutes of the office.

St. Thomas Accounting FAQs

These are the questions St. Thomas and Elgin County callers ask us most, answered the way we would answer them on the phone.

Do I need to come to London to file my taxes?

No. Most St. Thomas clients never visit the office: you upload slips and receipts through our secure client portal, sign the T183 e-filing authorization electronically and go over the return with us by phone or video call.

If you would rather hand over a folder in person, the downtown London office is 25 to 30 minutes up Highway 4 and open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well as weekdays.

Can you help a new business supplying the battery plant set up payroll and HST?

Yes. We open the CRA payroll program account, set up source deductions and remittances, and register the business for HST once sales are on track to pass the $30,000 small supplier threshold, or sooner if registering voluntarily makes sense for your input tax credits.

From there, our payroll services for St. Thomas employers keep each pay run, remittance and T4 slip on schedule, and our bookkeeping for Elgin County businesses keeps the HST return backed by clean records.

Do you work with Elgin County farms?

Yes. We prepare farm income on the T2042 statement, help keep the figures Agricorp uses for AgriStability and AgriInvest consistent with your tax return, and make sure the annual Farm Business Registration is not missed.

We also encourage families to start the succession conversation years before a transfer. The intergenerational farm rollover and the capital gains exemption for qualified farm property work best with time to plan.

Has the PowerCo production delay changed anything for local businesses?

The tax rules are the same, but the timing of your revenue may not be. PowerCo announced in September 2026 that cell production will start in 2029 rather than 2027, while construction of the first phase continues.

If your forecast assumed production-phase work in 2027, it is worth revisiting instalments, hiring plans and when incorporation makes sense. We can rework those numbers with you before your next year-end.
